What you should know about Humility and Meekness

What you should know about Humility and Meekness

Humility implies one being humble and it is an attitude shown towards others while meekness is retraining one’s power so as to allow room for others.

Both go together and with these qualities working in one’s life, the benefits are immersing.

First of all, God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble (James 4: 6, Proverbs 3: 34, 1 Peter 5: 5-6, Luke 1: 52, Psalm 138: 6). We all need the grace of God it’s what makes the difference. It makes a little input of one’s effort look magnified while pride makes one have an exaggerated image of one’s self. Humility makes one feel little of one’s self and the need to know more. This is totally different from having low self-esteem because humble people have their self-esteem intact.

One of the Beatitudes in Matthew 5: 3 says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven”. To be poor in spirit implies one knowing that they have no power of their own but solely rely on God for help.

A little on Meekness

As I earlier defined meekness to be restraining one’s power so as to allow room for others. Even though you know you have what it takes, you don’t “show off”  but only use it when necessary. This reminds me of the temptation Jesus had after fasting for 40 days and 40 nights. Not that He didn’t have the power to turn stone into bread but doing this was showing off and regarded as a sin.

There are times people need to be cool and just watch how things unfold especially if you have been led by the Holy Spirit to stay calm.

Let’s look at what Matthew 11: 29 says,

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Vs 30: For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

We as humans have a lot of burdens that we carry on our shoulders. A lot of things to worry about but Jesus has given us a route of escape that we don’t need to pay a dime for.

How do you do this?

As Christians, it’s important to believe God and know that He has your best interest at heart. We are to take the yolk of Jesus which is meekness and lowliness in the heart by trusting in Him. This yolk will translate into one’s burden being easy and light when we cast all our cares on Him (1 Peter 5: 7).

Once you are able to do this, you begin to enjoy Peace of mind in every area of your life.

Benefits of Meekness

One benefit of meekness is seen in Matthew 5: 5, “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Looking at the definition of meekness and associating it with its rewards, this simply means that even though one knows that he/she has a little gift in a particular area, rather than showing off helps others. God is really pleased with these group of people and in turn, he/she acquires much more in return than expected. If one keeps doing this, the person is on the way to inheriting the earth.

Using Moses as a Biblical example in Numbers 12: 3

3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

Deuteronomy 43: 10- 12 speaks about how Moses was the greatest prophet that ever lived in Israel. He had the closest contact with God than any other human ever did.

Even though he was given the power to rule the Israelites, he saw himself as very little.

Remember when God wanted to wipe off the people of Israel because of their sins and God said He will make Moses a mightier and greater than they (Deuteronomy 9: 13- 14). Moses kept on interceding for His people (Exodus 32 vs 9- 33).

Benefits of Humility and Meekness

Humility and Meekness work hand in hand. God is able to entrust His wealth and riches to those that are meek and humble because He knows that His resources will not be wasted and God does not like wastage (John 6: 12)

Humility and Meekness will get you a lot of good results without you having to pray and fast for it. This is why it is important to build and develop Godly characters.

Even in the midst of difficult situations, let your humility and meekness speak. This should not be mistaken for keeping quiet when something wrong is being done. Speak the truth at all time

We are also told that God is pleased with us when we do what is right and patiently endure unfair treatment (1 Peter 2: 19). You might get a better understanding of reading through the New Living Translation.

A previous post on my website about a girl named Eva can further elaborate my point.

I hope you’ve been blessed by this post, it would be nice to hear from you.

Before I end, there is something important I’ll like to add that. It is important that you accept Jesus into your life if you haven’t and let Him be your personal Lord and Saviour. If you are in this category, join me in the salvation prayer.

Lord Jesus, I come as a sinner, forgive me all my sins, cleanse me with your blood. I accept you today as my personal Lord and Saviour, I am free from all powers of sin, to serve the living God.
